Background to the Work:

I first began producing abstract images in the late 1960's wanting to move a way from traditional landscape and portraiture. I was inspired by visits to galleries in London and Europe as well as in response to the abstract art collection that was being assembled by the Ulster Museum. Early influences included Victor Vasarely and Josef Albers as well as an awareness of contemporary art from the magazine Studio International. The production of Abstract painting has been a thread running through out my work since then.

These paintings continue my exploration of abstraction as an evolutionary and intuitive process. They are founded on the idea that they will have their own life rather than an attempt to reproduce a view of the world contained in a picture frame. The work encourages the viewer I hope to enter the world of the paintings, and to undertake something of a transcendental journey towards enlightenment and peace.
